We recently connected with Kate Troyer and have shared our conversation below.
Kate, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I already had a very successful home staging and design consulting business when I decided to pivot to my now, Feng Shui based business. I had done it before, I was already operating a successful business, I knew how to market, I had a large client list and a big network. I did it once, of course I could do it again, easily. I mean, I wasn’t even changing my business name, I was only pivoting…
What I didn’t anticipate was that most of my ideal clients, didn’t know what Feng Shui is or had very little knowledge on what it was and how it could profoundly impact their life. I was aware that it wasn’t something everyone knew about but I didn’t anticipate the genuine hesitation from others. Simply because- they did not have a frame of reference for the words, for what it was.
A challenge I wasn’t expecting but I believe it had a divine purpose. I remember when I was going through my certification program, I didn’t understand why Feng Shui wasn’t more popular. Everyone loves HGTV shows, “wellness” is a buzzword. So why wasn’t this “wellness practice for your home” not gaining more traction.
Well, now I understood why and this challenge became part of my mission. To make this accessible and understandable for anyone, at any level. Because I truly believe everyone can benefit from having an awareness of how their home affects and reflects them. Whether they want to dive deep or whether they just hear a couple principles that changes the way they live in their spaces.
So while this started as an extremely frustrating challenge, it was exactly the challenge I needed to be able to hone my craft in a different way. In a more impactful way, so that I could reach and benefit the most people. Not just locally but all over the world.
Kate, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m and the creator of Homeslice Living and a Certified Feng Shui Practitioner. Feng shui has personally helped me heal many of the things that held me back and kept me in a victim mentality for over 30 years. I started out my career as a designer and home stager but, once I found Feng Shui and started experiencing the benefits and transformation of it in my own life, I knew I had to become a certified.
I love making this ancient art easy to understand and simple to implement! My specialty is merging together the powerful manifestation techniques of Feng Shui and the aesthetically pleasing elements of home design.
Basically, I work with clients to connect their home space with mind-body practices.
Which helps them to heal parts of their life that have been holding them back. While teaching them to utilize the design of their space as a life size vision board.
I provide a range of services from Intuitively led design consulting to life transforming, in-depth Feng Shui consultations. I’m also a public speaker at events, retreats and workshops all over the country and online.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Opting for a different journey threw me into a realm of unexpected choices and opportunities. Ending a five-year relationship became inevitable when my partner couldn’t support my newfound path, refusing to believe in the transformation I was undergoing. Letting go, although incredibly difficult, was essential. For anyone facing a similar situation, remember, the right partner will stand by you, embracing your vision as fervently as you do. Following your inner guidance, though challenging, proves worthwhile, leading to eventual resolution.
My deep dive into personal practice led me through my own dark night of the soul, unearthing childhood trauma that had haunted me for over three decades. In this process, I realized I hadn’t truly inhabited my body for most of my life. Yet, this exploration also provided the safety and tools I needed to reconnect with myself through the intricate dance of mind, body, and home.
This profound reconnection empowered me to create a space for my clients to embark on similar journeys. Unexpected challenges emerged, such as introducing people to the mysterious world of Feng Shui and convincing them of its necessity in their lives. Choosing a different path brought both unforeseen hurdles and unforeseen blessings, all of which I’m profoundly grateful for.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Choosing to shift my business focus from conventional home staging and design to primarily embracing Feng Shui also meant embarking on a personal transformation. I was determined not to be someone who simply regurgitated knowledge acquired in school. My commitment was to integrate these practices authentically within my own home and life, walking my talk, and the unexpected insights and healing that followed were beyond my expectations.
The newfound awareness within my home offered profound insights into my personal life that I couldn’t ignore. It initiated an inner journey, bringing me closer to myself mentally, spiritually, and physically in the first year and a half of my practice than ever before. This experience, while amazing, wasn’t without its challenges. Confronting the darker aspects of oneself, especially after uncovering patterns in your space, isn’t an easy path, but it’s undeniably powerful.
This shift in my business mirrored a transformation within my personal life, altering the very core of my being. It reconnected me with my essence and provided a profound perspective not only for my own journey but also a solid foundation to connect with clients authentically. This connection allows me to assist them in navigating their life challenges, supporting their healing journey, and empowering them to meet their goals.
