We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jojo Alderson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jojo below.
Jojo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I Like to think that all my projects are meaningful. They are meaningful to me. My art lets me process thinking, evolve and be me. My goal is for the project to shine and reflect something of my essence or thinking at a certain time in my life. And to evoke something in the viewer. Something familiar, a question, an answer, excitement of beauty and/or inspiration.
Even if it is a project that I am not very pleased with. It has moved me forward on to the next idea/ project. It always brings me something else a new challenge, a new adventure, a puzzle.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jojo Alderson, I am a female artist. I was born in Sweden and currently live in Los Angeles, California.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an artist.
My mom was very creative always drawing and coming up with fun crafts. She did some painting and so did my grandmother. So it’s been very much in my linage.
When I was little I used to constantly practice my drawing
and painting.
I was lucky that we had art class all through school and that I could have art and design as an elective in high school. And that I had many different inspiring teachers often strong women.
After school I went to Study in London England.
I did a foundation course in art and design and a BA in Fashion and textiles.
And I met my husband at University and ended up staying in London for 15years until we moved to Los Angeles 7 years ago.
In London I worked in Fashion and Textiles and had my daughter before moving to LA.
Motherhood was a big change for me and it got more clear that creating was what was important to me.
Creating helped me stay “me” in all the changes that motherhood bring.
Since moving to LA I have been more and more drawn to art making.
I have been exploring different mediums and developed my own unique way of working. Where I mix and take inspiration from fashion, art, design, nature and more.
A lot of my work is about being a women in this world and finding my voice.
Lately I have taken a lot of inspiration from old traditions of women working with textiles.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I would love for society to be more diverse. To see that there are so many different kind of people, and that we need all of these different kind of thinkers and doers to make the world a better place. I would love it to be more about quality rather than quantity. Less about making more stuff to make more money.
I would love for society to drop the believe system that to be an artist you have to be a struggling artist. And the belief system that female artists are less talented.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Not for me. I am very much an analog person. I like things in the flesh. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be something great for someone else.
