We recently connected with Jazmyn Bias and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jazmyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I started UnBiased Skincare with a vision to be different from any other Medical Spa in this industry. Being that this is somewhat a flooded industry as beauty brands and influencers grow, I knew it would be a little difficult to be “different.” At UnBiased Skincare, we always put the clients needs first and foremost. What this industry tends to lack, is the actual care it takes to give to your clients. I schedule appointments in a way that its not rushed or just a rotating door and getting them in and out and onto the next person. No appointment is rushed, I take individual time and quality time with my clients.
I understand time and money in this industry are very important and it can be intimidating to you in the beginning that your competitors may make a little more than you or have more clientele. However, throughout my 10 + years in this industry, I’ve learned taking my time, doing things well and right, has led me to over my 2,000 clients and success with them.
Jazmyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi there! My name is Jazmyn Bias, owner of UnBiased Skincare Medical Spa, nestled in the heart of South City in Saint Louis, Mo.! I am originally from Quincy, Il. but grew up in Chicago, Il. and have made Saint Louis my home since 2014. I initially went to school for Criminal Justice and found very quickly I wanted to change my sights to something completely different! I started out as a Clinical Massage Therapist after going to school to specialize in sports massage and added Advanced Esthetics to my resume when I went back to school to concentrate on skincare.
I have been going to spas, getting massages, and getting facials for quite sometime growing up and I noticed there was a lack of diversity in each and every place I went to. I noticed this at a pretty young age and even working at Med Spas, I wasn’t apart of the “culture” as a woman of color. I knew I wanted to own a spa around the age of 21, but I recognized I wanted it to be different, that it had to be different than what I was used to and what clients were used to. I wanted to create a soft, comfortable, inclusive feel and that’s exactly what I created.
We offer a range of services and we are constantly expanding our service menu to diversify and remain as inclusive as possible. I believe everyone should have access to comfortable, affordable skincare and treatments. Some of our most popular services include Deluxe HydraFacial’s/pamper me facials, advanced chemical peel treatments, full body waxing, dermaplaning, B12 injections, lip filler, and Botox.
I’m most proud of the continuing growth of my company. I learn something new each and everyday! That is what excites me the most about this industry and being prepared for my clients’ needs. I want my current and coming clients to know they will always have a safe place at UnBiased Skincare. Getting treatments of any kind can vary so much to each individual need. Some clients come in and have a story behind why they are coming in for treatments and wanting a boost of confidence or just simply touch therapy and relaxation from a possible rough work day.
My mission is for each one of my clients to feel comfortable, relaxed, and taken care of!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the main journeys to illustrate my resilience, was staying positive and ahead of the game during 2020 (and even until now.) I remember when I got the e mail that my building where I first had UnBiased Skincare, was going to be locked down and I would have zero access to the building for up to 90 days. Having put my all in to start this company, I felt lost and had the feeling that I was bout to lose everything I just worked so hard to build and maintain.
I took the necessary steps back that I needed and stayed home and safe. Having no family here in Saint Louis to rely on, and three months had passed with no income, I knew I needed to make a change to save my business. There were so many fellow service providers who I knew had to leave their businesses behind, move, or start over elsewhere because of the pandemic.
After I gained access to my loft space where my business was located in late June of 2020, I worked tirelessly to build my clientele back up, and working two more jobs to make connections and maintain living in Saint Louis. I read books on business building, listened to podcasts about how to get clients comfortable with getting hands on services again, and repivoted my business to a different location to save on costs. This transition period was very hard to maintain, but I kept going and growing. Continuing my education with research and being calm helped me be on the top of my game!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been to remain consistent. I make sure to maintain healthy boundaries with clients, listen to their needs, take proper time with them, and get to know them. The level of privacy and trust my clients have with me, is what I believe gives them the open door to tell others how UnBiased Skincare is different.
