Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Lorneka Joseph. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr. Lorneka , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, there were two to three majors to choose from in high school which was an easy process for me. I chose the sciences as I was always intrigued by chemistry, medicine and inner healing.
While in high school, my mother’s health took an unexpected turn and she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Like most mothers, I started doing research at the public library and she supported my curiosity. Upon graduation, I told my mum that I would like to pursue medicine and she started making phone calls.
After graduating at fifteen years old, my mother’s best friend Lydia came over to our home, overheard our conversation and decided to call a pharmacist who owned her own pharmacy. And next thing I knew, I was asked to go in for an interview and that’s how I landed my first job in health and wellness.
I was happy and restless the night before my interview. I know pantyhose aren’t as popular now but I wore a black pant-suit, black kitten heels with sheer black pantyhose. My brother didn’t understand my excitement but my family was excited.
When you come from a place of constant lack, any sign of breakthrough is a celebration.
Unfortunately, my mother Lorette later died in Havana, Cuba where we pursued advanced medical care.
In my quest to find solutions for my mother, my long term goal was to prevent loved ones from losing their lives prematurely by going to college and making a difference in my community.
Job recruitment was easy for a small nation. Back then, The Bahamas relied on word of mouth and relationships. There was a process but if you had good grades and someone could speak to your character, you were able to secure a job.
I am grateful for my path, family and community who supported me with pursuing my medical dream. My first job at a pharmacy taught me patient-care, empathy, relationship-building and management skills.
Dr. Lorneka , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Absolutely. Prior to the pandemic, I started to experience some burnout in the medical profession that was an alarm for me.
So I began to pray and ask God for wisdom and guidance with my gifts. Time went by so when the pandemic hit, I was beyond burnout and decided to step down and focus more on my company.
Even though it was risky, making the decision to emotionally rest and increase my company’s visibility was a great pivot for me as a pharmacist and motivational speaker.
It was also during the pandemic that I decided to teach more on mental health online and was later featured in Forbes magazine. This was the green light I needed to follow God and not remain comfortable as a corporate employee.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think that spiritual growth, accountability and the right community are helpful tools to succeed in any industry.
But for anyone in wellness or business, implementing these tips are critical because more than degrees and accolades, success is seventy-five percent mindset.
