We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Herman Guerra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Herman below.
Alright, Herman thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
From day 1, I knew we wanted to build a business that we could be proud of. My wife and I knew the many issues and problems that surrounded your “standard” contractor. We are not that. We come from humble backgrounds and we were taught from an early age, the value of hard work. Building a construction company that held itself accountable for quality, honesty and transparency has been the path we’ve chosen. While we’ve made many mistakes, we have also guaranteed quality and the customers experience through the design and build process. As we continue to build East Dallas and our surrounding community, we know that we are building quality spaces. Spaces that are not only beautiful but also built to high standards. I know that a decade from now our impact on the east Dallas community will be large. Every neighborhood will have been touched by our team. We want to be remembered as a company that made a positive impact. With our Design Center near the Dallas Arboretum, we have been able to build a home base that has elevated our status in the construction community. We are destined for greatness!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Both my wife and I were raised in east Dallas. After graduating UT Austin in 2005 I worked for the government for 10 years. From there I helped to creat ONE90 Smoked Meats, an East Dallas BBQ staple. Around 2017 I knew it was time for a new venture- so I went back to my roots.
As a very young kid- maybe 8 years old- my brother and I would have to help my father, Herman Guerra Jr, on the weekends with his side work in construction. I remember disliking waking up at 7am, going to Home Depot and then to the job site. My dad would remodel bathrooms, complete drywall work, tile work and things like this. We didn’t do much at first but as time passed, my brother and I were tasked with more and more responsibility. We started cutting tiles, moving material, clean up and things like this. Eventually we had tools, we would help hang drywall, help frame, etc. My father continued this until his passing in 2013. If it were not for this background, my family would not be where we are now. This strong work ethic has led to strong character and gave men the base knowledge needed to start HG&Co. All this talk about my dad and I have to mention my mother, Rosalinda Guerra. While the work ethic came from my dad, my integrity, honesty and pure belief in myself was instilled in me from an early age. The combination made for a healthy childhood.
HG&Co Home Improvement sets ourselves apart from other companies with out services and the belief in the Customer experience. We streamline the Design/Build process through our Design Center on Garland rd. Our clients are able to work one on one with our interior designers in out intimate space to pick all of their tile, flooring, lighting, vanities, countertops and more. By controlling the purchasing process, we are able to minimize the stresses on the customer. We take care of ordering, delivering and organizing for construction. With the release of our new Retail website, we hope to reach further into DFW to provide other Dallasites with the materials they need for this new home or renovations.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?

We’ve worked diligently to build our Design/Retail space near the Dallas arboretum- it’s beautiful. As a final push, we’ve recently launched an e-commerce website. We now offer flooring, tile and plumbing. The con- we have a lot of work ahead of us to make this happen logistically. Once orders start rolling in, we will have to increase our staff to fulfill orders. We want to provide an exceptional service.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
We recently added to our portfolio. Along with construction services to the general public, retail and e-commerce, we have started to invest into properties to renovate and sell. We just completed our first in East Dallas. A full renovation down to the studs took 3 months- that’s fast!. Our 2400sqft project listed on a Friday and was under contract by Monday. We are currently looking for our second investment property. Now, I know what you’re thinking- just another flipper….. No! We will continue our high standards and want to renovate and “flip” home that will last a lifetime.
