I grew up in a small town, and like many young adults, I wasn’t taught much about credit. It was one of those life skills that somehow got overlooked in my education. I went through my teenage years blissfully unaware of the importance of good credit or the consequences of mismanaging it.
When I turned 18, I decided to get my first credit card. I thought it was like having free money. Little did I know that credit came with a lot of rules and responsibilities. I treated it like a game, swiping my card without much thought for the future. I was enticed by all those flashy advertisements and offers for credit cards that promised cash back, rewards, and other perks.
The first few years were a breeze, and I lived in a kind of financial bubble. I bought things I didn’t need and rarely checked my monthly statements. I was oblivious to the fact that interest was slowly piling up, and my credit score was plummeting. It wasn’t until I applied for a car loan that reality hit me hard. My application was denied, and I was told it was due to my poor credit history.
It was a wakeup call, and I realized I needed to educate myself about credit. I started reading books, articles, and watching videos about credit management. It was shocking to learn how little I knew about this essential aspect of adulthood. As I delved deeper into the subject, I discovered that credit wasn’t just about borrowing money; it affected everything from renting an apartment to getting a job.
I also became aware of the many predatory practices in the credit industry, which disproportionately affected people like me who were ignorant about the system. So, I founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and assisting people with their credit issues. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One important lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that credit cards were essentially a source of “free money.” When I was young and inexperienced with financial matters, I naively believed that having a credit card meant I could buy whatever I wanted without consequences. This belief stemmed from a lack of proper education about credit and finances.
The backstory of not knowing about credit is quite common and reflects a gap in financial education in many schools and households. Growing up, my family didn’t discuss financial matters much, and the topic of credit was never really broached. I remember seeing credit card advertisements on TV, promoting rewards, cashback, and other perks. They made having a credit card look like a ticket to endless shopping sprees and fun.
In high school, I was so focused on academics and extra-curricular activities that I never gave much thought to financial literacy. It wasn’t until I turned 18 and was bombarded with credit card offers that I decided to get one. It was exciting to have my first credit card, and I started using it without a full understanding of how credit worked.
I quickly maxed out my card, paying little attention to the interest rates or the consequences of carrying a balance. It wasn’t until I applied for a car loan and was met with a resounding denial that I realized how little I knew about credit and the significant impact it could have on my life.
That experience served as a wake-up call, prompting me to seek knowledge about credit, personal finance, and the laws governing these matters. I realized the importance of unlearning my initial misconception about credit cards, which had led me to irresponsible financial behavior. Over time, I discovered the importance of responsible credit management and the significance of credit laws and regulations.
This journey of unlearning and relearning was transformative. It inspired me to delve into the world of credit repair and education, and to help others avoid the pitfalls I had encountered. I wanted to share my knowledge, ensure that others had a better understanding of credit, and equip them with the tools to navigate the financial world successfully while staying within the bounds of the law.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Yes I tried to chase the bag instead of chasing the Change. It all started during my early twenties. I had recently graduated from college, landed my first job, and was excited about the newfound financial independence. With my very first paycheck, I decided to treat myself to a new laptop and a high-end smartphone. I also signed up for a couple of store credit cards to buy some other items I’d been eyeing.
At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the importance of responsible credit management. I used those store credit cards without much thought, and I soon found myself carrying balances on multiple cards. The monthly minimum payments seemed manageable, but as I continued to charge more and make only the minimum payments, the interest started piling up.
As time went on, I began to feel the weight of my financial decisions. My credit score, once pristine, began to drop significantly due to high credit card balances and late payments. I knew something had to change, and I had to pivot my financial behavior.
The pivotal moment came when I decided to take a deep dive into understanding credit. I started researching credit management strategies, studying the factors that influenced credit scores, and familiarizing myself with the laws that protected consumers in the credit industry. I realized that in order to pivot from my precarious financial situation, I needed to make some immediate changes.
Here’s what I did to turn my bad credit situation around:
Budgeting: I created a strict budget to ensure I could pay down my credit card balances. This involved cutting back on unnecessary expenses.
Debt consolidation: I explored options for consolidating my credit card debt, such as transferring balances to a card with a lower interest rate.
On-time payments: I set up automatic payments to ensure I never missed another due date.
Credit utilization: I focused on reducing the percentage of available credit I was using, which is a crucial factor in credit scores.
Learning credit laws: I familiarized myself with consumer protection laws, like the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, to better understand my rights and protections.
Credit monitoring: I regularly checked my credit reports for errors and inaccuracies and took steps to dispute any discrepancies I found.
Over time, I saw gradual improvements in my credit score. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but I remained persistent in my efforts to make responsible financial decisions. Eventually, I paid off my credit card balances, and my credit score began to climb.
This pivotal moment taught me the importance of financial responsibility and the need to pivot when faced with adverse circumstances. It also inspired me to help others facing similar challenges and ultimately led me to establish my credit repair business to assist people in their journey from bad credit to good credit while staying within the boundaries of credit laws.
