Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Khila Khani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Khila thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I first started practicing law, back in the 90’s, I was a solo practitioner. The firm name was Law Offices of Khila L. Khani. Three years into my solo practice, my husband was tired of floating from firm to firm and we make the decision that he will join the firm. Now, since he’s the “guy” most people would immediately assume that his name would be first, but as the founding partner of the firm, we decide that my name should be first and title it Khani & Auerbach. Besides, Khani & Auerbach rolls off the tongue much better.
Khila, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Back in 5th grade, we had career day. On that day, I chose to be a lawyer and even dressed up as one skirt suit and boots, the whole nine yards! It wasn’t until my senior year of college that I would consider law once again. I am most proud when I can solve problems for my clients and assist them in avoiding litigation (going to the courtroom), which can be costly and a waste of precious time. Khani & Auerbach is a law firm focusing on real estate, estate planning, and probate. We have been in practice for over 25 years and have remained in the same location in Downtown Hollywood for over 20 years.
We are known for providing efficient and personalized service to our clients. We pride ourselves on truly being of service to the community in which we both work and live. What sets us apart from other law firms is our knowledge of real estate law and the fact that we have a working art gallery on the premises, with my fine art pieces included among the work.
I am most proud of the fact that I started this practice with ZERO clients, no family in the BIZ and grew into what we are today. We are constantly seeking to find the next new thing that will make us even more efficient.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Lawyers are a dime a dozen and for the most part, as a career option, we don’t have the greatest reputation. I think lawyers fall somewhere between used car salespeople and employees at the DMV. But I digress. Knowing there are so many lawyers and that we have this built-in reputation among the public, the only thing I knew to do was be myself. I care about where I live, I care about humanity and I care about making sure that people are protected when they buy a home, sell a home or refinance a home. That is my driving force, caring about other people. As I mentioned already, I like to solve problems. The community is aware about us, as we have served in this community for over 25 years, in the same location. There is something to be said for staying in one place. Sometimes, it feels like an endurance race, but I’ll keep running, if it means that the community can benefit from my work.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
We never bought a billboard, we never put advertisements on bus benches, we never took out ads on television or cable, we don’t spend thousands of dollars on SEO maintenance, but what we did do is pound the proverbial pavement. Networking is by far the most incredible way to grow your clientele. And yes, it does depend upon what business you are in, but for us, as attorneys, this is how we grow. We also do not look at our colleagues as competition, because if you are good, the business will be there. We love what we do and sharing that with others, as we attend various networking events, becomes contagious and people want to see what we are about. Transparency is also a great strategy. People don’t want to hear baloney, they want to hear the truth.
