We caught up with the brilliant and insightful TOO $KINNY a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
TOO , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is the two mixtapes that I have coming soon. One is in English and the other is in Spanish. Music, with help of streaming, is becoming a lot more globally accessible. I feel like there has never been an artist that has done what I’m currently doing with all due respect. Some people say that what I’m doing is a niche but I disagree. I don’t make music for the sake of doing numbers, I make the best music possible. However, I know for a fact that what I’m doing in English and Spanish is going to change the game significantly. I know that Shakira, Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, Robi Draco etc. have made albums in multiple languages. But I feel like no artist has done it with as much versatility as me, especially in Hip Hop.
TOO , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into music after basically falling out of love with playing baseball. I was a casual rap fan that turned into a Hip Hop head with the help of White Iverson from Post Malone. This led me to Illmatic from Nas, as funny as that sounds. I went through the rabbit hole and said to myself that I wanted to do this. I solve many problems but I think one that is kinda frustrating would be the fact that people like me don’t get representation. By people like me I mean bilingual music heads. By people like me I mean DOMINICANS. With all due respect to Mexicans who I have a lot of love for, when Americans think of Latino or Hispanic they automatically assume Mexican. Granted I grew up in Hialeah which is basically Cuba 2.0 so I didn’t really have to deal with this, but it’s still frustrating that Americans don’t know anything about Dominican culture. Granted I’m American as well, and I love my fellow Americans but I just want them to understand not just the Dominican culture but the overall Hispanic culture too. I feel like that would bring EVERYBODY together because you have to understand others first before you can come together in unison. This is why I’m most proud of the dembow song that I did (440 Remix). So many Americans (or people from other countries) are hearing this and it’s so fresh to them. It’s kinda like how UK rap inspired Pop Smoke… idk it’s just super dope to connect with different cultures ya feel me? Obviously my main goal is to be considered the greatest of all time, but connecting cultures is another thing that I strive for as well.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Most definitely the book that automatically comes to mind would have to be Hustle Harder Hustle Smarter by Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent. I also like 48 laws of Power as well as the urban version of it, 50 laws of power. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill as well. As you can tell, I like books that are informative.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I don’t want to be overly traditional and just outright talk down on NFTs. I think the images and what not didn’t really amount to anything and I was not surprised. But I wouldn’t discount it entirely because at least it’s an idea and there’s nothing wrong with throwing ideas out there. In fact if we keep it music related, I feel like Taylor Swift, BTS, Nicki Minaj, and Bad Bunny who all have obsessive fanbases can make the NFT’s work. In what way? I’m not sure how… not with the pictures, cause the pictures don’t really add value. But in another way, I think the NFT’s can work. Basically I wouldn’t outright scrap the idea.
