We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Triana Akila. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Triana below.
Triana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I just dropped my very first EP – Love Chronicles! Most of the tracks were written back in 2018…it’s as if you were reading my journal. This project is a culmination of the love, loss, and lessons that come with love, so it’s very personal and relatable. I had a release concert for it and all of my people paid to come see me! It was amazing seeing all of the hard work finally come together.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I always say, I’m just a Christ-lover singing my testimony. Born and raised in the DMV, I’ve been singing since my dad took me to band practice for our church’s youth services at age 12. I’ve been in someone’s choir or on someone’s worship team ever since.
I started writing back in 2018. My vocal coach at the time encouraged me to release my music and the rest is history!
My songs are my testimonies. None of what we go through is only meant for us – so I use my gift to say the things that others may not have been able to articulate. My prayer is that it blesses every listener in some way!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
All of the testimonies. The stories of how people think I wrote a song taken straight from their journals! It shows that my music is relevant, and that’s a priority for me! My nephew is my biggest fan – he’s always singing my songs back to me or around the house. If no one else ever enjoys my music, that little guy saying I’m his favorite singer is enough for me!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Having just thrown my album release party, this one hits really close to home. Everyone that was going to help me out ended up not being available on the day of the show, so I had to find a videographer, sound guy, full band, and singers all within a few weeks of the show. It was more expensive and we were in a time crunch, but everything went so well!
One of the things I find more important as an artist is setting the atmosphere. If you’re stressed, then your team is likely to be uptight. So most important I chose to roll with every punch and trust that our collective devotion to our skills by way of rehearsals and personal preparation was going to shine that night. And shine we did!
