We recently connected with Jasmine Addison and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
During my 13-year tenure in technical support, I gained extensive experience in customer interaction. Over time, I have dealt with various customers with varying communication styles.
Working in this industry has enabled me to actively listen to customers and understand their needs. I have learned how to communicate face-to-face with customers, knowing that how I present something to them can either benefit or harm my business. Effective customer interaction is crucial for any business, and I understand its importance.
After all, it is the customers who make SK Candle Company possible.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If you have landed on this page, it was not coincidental; let me tell you about myself. My name is Jasmine, and I am passionate about fragrances, reading, writing, and stationery. I am the proud owner of SK Candle Co. and am pursuing my licensure as a License Professional Counselor. I wear many hats, including that of a wife, mother, student, business owner, and author. I have eight wonderful children and a pocket bully. Together, we are a family of eleven. There are ten others that I care for, pour into, and look after. Although it can be challenging, I embrace these roles with grace.
As a child, I was always fascinated by the perfume my grandmother used. Her scents would capture my attention no matter where I was in the house. It became my escape from reality and a source of comfort in my life. I dreamed of creating my own fragrance line one day. However, after I got married and became a mother, I lost myself in these roles and forgot about my desires. I realized the importance of “me time” and setting boundaries during this time. I learned to say “no” to certain things to prioritize my well-being and spiritual needs. During this phase, I could go away and spend time with God, and I would come back and feel a sense of peace.
Taking personal time for myself where I could relax and be myself. In those moments of solitude and prayer, I could refocus and restrategize to be at my best and give my best. I realized that this was not selfish but necessary for my well-being. At that time, I was a mother of seven children, and people often asked me how I looked so energized. This led me to launch the Me Time Candle, first introduced as Seventh Kiss. I wanted other mothers worldwide to know they could be bosses, set boundaries, and achieve balance in their lives through the peace of God. Even on their most challenging days, they could return to their safe place, relax, release, and reset. Even if they only had ten minutes to spare, they could inhale and enjoy the sweet fragrances, knowing when they are done they will have found where their strength truly comes from.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
When I started my candle business, my only priority was ensuring that my candles were made correctly. I was not interested in curating the fragrances or the candles, so I worked with a manufacturer. However, this meant that I did not have much control over the cost of production, and, as a result, my profit margins were low.
To get my business off the ground, I had to take on many roles, including content manager, website designer, order taker, packer, shipper, and accountant. As I learned more about the products I was selling, I became interested in the candle-making process. There was a season when I could not afford an order for the holiday season, so I began experimenting with candle-making in my kitchen. After two months, I discovered I enjoyed curating fragrances and being creative. I have made candles for my company for the past three years and even expanded to other products.
Throughout my journey, I have learned that manufacturing cannot be rushed and that not all raw materials are created equal. While some products work well, others do not. However, I have discovered what works best by persevering and experimenting.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a business owner, I have had to demonstrate resilience numerous times. There were times when I questioned whether starting a business was the right choice for me, given the seemingly insurmountable odds against me. I was unsure of myself and had created something beyond my capabilities.
As a mom of 8, a wife, a full-time employee, a college student pursuing my bachelor’s degree, and with six school-age children, launching my business was daunting. It took me almost a year to sell just 50 candles, leaving me feeling discouraged, hurt, and without guidance, knowledge, expertise, or funding. My friends and family were not entrepreneurs, so I had no one to turn to for advice, support, or motivation. I even began questioning whether my prices were too high and if I should continue.
Despite my struggles, I persevered. I had to teach myself everything as I went along, with no resources or knowledge of how to get started. This meant that funding came out of my own pocket, and I did not have any business friends or associates to learn from. Essentially, it has just been me and God, with him guiding me along the way. Although I made mistakes and missed my goals, these challenges taught me valuable lessons that are essential for any business owner.
Starting and running a business is challenging, but overcoming these challenges has only strengthened me. I believe that as a business owner, facing adversity is inevitable, but it is how we rise above it that sets us apart. Adapting to life’s hard hits and moving forward is not just a skill; it’s a necessary part of life.
