We recently connected with Scott Oshan and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea of creating Integrated Security Solutions Group arose in 2016. I was working for various event & security companies, and always saw the same scenario. An individual gets hired, gets minimal training and information, and then is thrown into an event with little to no information on what to do. This often lead to(and still does), serious security issues, poor quality of staff, and injuries to the staff and public. Having been in the industry for 28 years starting at the bottom as an officer and working my way up to Director of Security, I have seen and worked through most of the facets of what security could and should be. ISSG was born out of necessity, a need for well trained staff who want to be be working, not just having to work. The critical element that was missing from the clients perspective was training. ISSG’s focus was to deliver fully trained security specialists, who have access to a full training academy to grow within the company and industry, or move on to other career choices. This unique approach has made ISSG one of the top high end security specialist providers. Having well trained and well paid staff makes all happy, clients, staff and of course management.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in New York City and the surrounding boroughs for majority of my early life, working various jobs more for survival mode than career choice. I was working at a copy shop next door to what was then the David Letterman Theater in midtown Manhattan around 1991.. As we were on Broadway and in the theatre district, many of the clients that came in were in the entertainment industry. everything from Management companies for actors/actresses and musical acts and even adult entertainment. One day a client came in that was the owner of an adult entertainment management company to make flyers for an upcoming event. We had the usual short retail conversation, and when I was done with his order he asked me if I had ever done security as I had the “look”. I told him I did not but was a quick learner. We chatted further and he left, and i thought nothing further of it. The next day he came back in and offered me a position to do transport security for his talent to various locations, including radio stations and special appearances. I can honestly write another five pages on this time in my life but lets close it out with I learned quite a bit in a short period of time, even at that young age, of what security was and what it should have been
ISSG provides a higher tier security specialist service that works for all involved. I find that the blueprint of training, client relationships, and knowing who your staff is, makes for a successful small business. All of our clients have direct access to all upper management 24/7 and we all know our staff by their first names, not an ID number. Keeping that personal touch, and providing exceptional services is what makes our brand successful. We provide Security Specialists for events, corporate or entertainment wise, including Personal Protection Officers(Bodyguards), high risk clientele, transportation options from vehicles to private jets. Currently we are licensed in Texas, but are expanding to Nevada, New York, Florida and California. Our client testimonials speak for themselves regarding our services. Those, and a comprehensive list of our services provided are available on our website. www.issgllc.com.
Any advice for managing a team?
While a team is a unified group of people making great things happen, it is made up of individuals. This is so important to remember. Each individual is a unique, complex balance of talent, personality, recommendation’s and individual thoughts and ideas. In my opinion, I believe that to have a great team, you must take time no matter how busy you are listen. Listen to your team, listen to the individuals that make up your team and never negate what they are saying. There is a key balance for success, especially in the service industry. ISSG is fortunate to have a core group of staff who care for the brand and continuously have ideas and champion the brand.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty. Do not sell what you cannot provide. The security industry is notorious for that and more and more you hear of the repercussions of poor or inadequate staffing, just so the company can meet the numbers quota. We never oversell and are straight forward with all clients. When we do our consulting for a quote, we break down all areas of what is needed and what the client can work with. We have actually turned down events as what was being asked for was not a feasible option safety wise. When it comes to our security services, there is no grey area. Our clients respect this and that sells by word of mouth.
