We were lucky to catch up with Kami Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kami, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
When I finally decided to start my business I decided I needed to research, so to IG and Google I went! I was looking up everything that I could about starting a business. I needed to know about naming a business, to getting an LLC, and bank account. I also needed to research lash extensions because I really knew nothing about it. Over the course of a few months I continued to research looking at peoples Instagram pages, and watching YouTube videos. As I was doing this I started seeing permanent makeup for eyebrows and knew this was something that I would prefer to do over lashes. However, after researching and finding an artist I would want to train me, the brow course was pretty expensive, more expensive than I could afford at the time. I decided my plan would be to start with lashes and grow into permanent makeup once I could afford the course. I found an excellent lash artist that is based out of Detroit and she was running a special for her lash course, and the timing couldn’t have been any better. I wrote her on Instagram and paid the required deposit to secure my spot for the course and in November of 2020 I took a 2 day lash course in Detroit. I had to bring my own model on day 2, but the class came with all of the materials and supplies that I needed to start with clients right away. I was already promoting that I was starting on social media so that helped to start bring in clients when I first began.
Kami, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Kami Powell, owner of Divine Beauty Bar. I have a medical background of 16 years where I was going to school for nursing, and eventually just felt it was not fulfilling me and making me happy. I have always had a passion for beauty and did hair for fun. I knew that there was space for me in this industry I just didn’t know exactly where I fit in and was not something I loved enough to make a career.
Over the past 3 years I have quit my full-time job at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, and obtained my Esthetician license. I currently offer PMU (permanent makeup), facials, waxing, and lashes. I have grown more in the permanent makeup industry by adding lip blush to my services. With all my services, especially PMU comes much compassion, education and practice. This craft takes dedication and discipline, you must continue to educate yourself and practice daily in order to be great and gain confidence.
I want to service individuals who want fuller eyebrows or would love to have lip color on their lips all the time. With permanent makeup tattooing results last 1-3 years saving you time and gaining you back confidence. I love making people feel happy about themselves and want to grow more in the industry by adding eyeliner, camouflage and scalp PMU to my services in the near future.
What sets me apart is that I offer multiple PMU services so clients don’t have to travel to different locations for the services they want. I am also here in West Michigan, which is not a popular area for PMU. Most of these services would need to be done on the East side of the state or the West coast of the US.
I am very proud of my growth so far and all I have accomplished in less than 3 years. I am really looking forward to putting in the hardwork to reach goals I have made for myself over the next year. I hold myself and my work at a very high standard and want my clients to have an excellent experience every time they come to me and know the end results will leave them feeling amazing.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What I think has helped build my reputation is my professionalism and consistency. I make sure that I’m running on time and make sure that I am responsive to my clients. I take pride in the work that I do and make sure my clients are comfortable. My space is professional, quiet, and intimate and I make sure that it’s like that every time the client steps foot in my space. I don’t want to give the client just a great experience the first time I want them to have that great experience every time they come. At Divine Beauty Bar 80% of my clients are returning customers.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients has been social media platforms like IG and Facebook and also word of mouth. All the clients I serviced have seen me on social media from posts and ads or were told by a client about me.
