We were lucky to catch up with Makeda Lalor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Makeda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
Wow, it’s almost surreal how vividly I remember the moment I embarked on the journey to establish PeoplePlus Management Solutions Ltd. I was at my workplace one fine day, just like any other, when a colleague who would be my very first client posed the million-dollar question. “Makeda, she said, why don’t you consider starting your own company and offering the same services you’re providing here?” As I pondered her words that evening, I felt a surge of determination. My risk tolerance was remarkably high, and I knew I couldn’t turn back.
The initial steps I had to take were clear but not without their complexities. First and foremost, I had to select a business name. This seemingly simple task proved to be quite a challenge. After numerous attempts, it was apparent that the name I initially wanted was unavailable, as were the following 20+ options. Ultimately, God smiled upon me, and I secured the name “PeoplePlus,” a choice I still consider a blessing in disguise.
With the name in hand, I proceeded to the Office of Jamaica to officially register my business. Next came the establishment of a business bank account and the creation of essential marketing materials. Once these foundational elements were in place, I delved into administrative work, gearing up for sales to drive my business forward.
The most formidable challenges I encountered during this process were company registration and setting up the business bank account. These hurdles could be exceptionally demanding and frustrating.
My advice to anyone considering starting their own business is simple: Start now. Don’t wait until you are ready; you will get ready along the way. Embrace the journey, face the challenges, and move forward with determination.

Makeda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I hail from the charming and peaceful rural Clarendon, Prospect, to be exact, where the presence of my beloved family enriched my upbringing. With my brothers, sister and mother by my side, I learned the true meaning of family, community, and faith. My heart has always been drawn to people, and I’m an unapologetic optimist, always seeing the beauty in everything and everyone. My profound love for God has been my guiding light throughout my life.
My journey has brought me to the role of Managing Director at PeoplePlus Management Solutions Limited, a company dedicated to providing invaluable human resources, business advisory and support services to small and medium-sized enterprises across Jamaica. We specialize in areas such as staff recruitment, business strategy, scale-up support, operations management and business process enhancement. Our ultimate goal is to fuel growth and boost revenue for our valued clients.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching and guiding numerous entrepreneurs, helping them successfully establish and refine their operations. I’ve shared my extensive knowledge of business dynamics and market forces with the aim of contributing to their enduring success and, in turn, expanding their reputation and clientele base.
My professional journey began at the HEART Trust/National Training Agency, where I started as a trainee. I quickly advanced to roles such as Acting Senior Secretary and Administrative Assistant through critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative approach. My path led me to the General Manager, Human Resources Operations and Projects position at Think, Grow Lead before I ventured out to establish my own venture, PeoplePlus Management Solutions Limited.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree and an Associate of Science degree in Human Resource Management from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean. In addition, I’m a certified Trainer of Trainers through the HEART Trust/National Training Agency and have completed professional development courses in administrative management, records management, behavioural interviewing skills, and techniques.
Fueling my passion for personal and professional coaching, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a keynote and motivational speaker on numerous occasions. One of my favourite quotes, by Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, perfectly encapsulates my approach to business and life: “What do you need to start a business? Three simple things: know your product better than anyone, know your customer, and have a burning desire to succeed.”

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for expanding your client base is prioritizing exceptional service and genuine care for your client’s businesses and growth rather than solely pursuing financial gain.
When clients sense your authentic concern and witness your service quality, they are more likely to recognize your commitment. By focusing on these areas, clients will come, and they will come in loads.
