We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charis Sellick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Charis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have been fortunate enough to have been a part of a lot of meaningful projects. I recently produced my first mini-series on YouTube called Death Mettle. It was a project I knew would be really challenging since I produced, directed, edited and was in it. It was for sure something that took me out of my comfort zone and I am really impressed with the product, a true testament to collaboration and having very talented friends. My friend Brewer Kunnemann wrote the script and its very heartfelt, following a fictional songwriter whos song gets stolen. It’s fictional but also tells a very real story of fandom, how women are treated in the internet space and what you do when you know no on will believe you. What I love so much about theatre and film is it’s all about storytelling, I have been able to contribute to the telling of so many incredible stories recently and it’s all I have ever wanted to do.
Charis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an all around content creator and Actress in the Atlanta area. I create reaction content and original content on YouTube. My YouTube Channel is very music based as I do musical theatre; It’s very “Theatre Kid” centric. But I am putting a lot of energy into original scripted content that I am so passionate about. On Instagram I create lifestyle content and just focus on positivity and escapism from all the negativity the world brings and that can come with the entertainment industry sometimes. I just want to make people smile as much as they can and then think a little bit, and then smile again.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
YouTube is such a beast. Anything with an algorithm is going to be frustrating. Views drop for no reason, you think you have a plan and then it goes out the window for some random reason. My philosophy is adapt or die. Something isn’t working? What is in our power to change that? As always focus on your niche, every content creator will tell you that. Find something you like and embrace that. Building an audience anywhere is about engagement but people have to find a common interest in you the be engaged in the first place. But overall START and DON’T GIVE UP. Life is ups and downs and content creation is the same.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I have been very lucky with my family and friends being very supportive of me being a creative, even the ones that can’t relate. I think for the majority of people the disconnect comes with the instability that we have both monetarily and with our time. As an actor you never know when you will book something and if you do you don’t know what the time commitment will be. I think non-creatives sometimes don’t see the “real job” aspect of it or know the scope of what success looks like in this industry unless you are in a Marvel movie or have a million subscribers on YouTube. There is so much more than that!
