We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luca Gomez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luca below.
Luca, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
This question takes me back to the first time I ever picked up a camera. This is all the way back in probably 2009 when I was around 7 years old. Back then, I had no idea that pursuing a career in making movies or telling stories was a career option. Up to that point, I was only told there were four paths to take in the “adult” world (Doctor, firefighter, astronaut, and veterinarian).
Although I knew this, I also knew that there was something special about the feeling of creating something out of nothing but an idea. As I got older, I began to learn more and more about cameras and storytelling and fell in love with the creations of people like Casey Neistat, Peter McKinnon, and Smosh. As my learning increased, my perspectives changed, and I grew up, I knew that this was something that I wanted to pursue as a career.
Since I was in about 5th grade, I have been making YouTube videos showcasing my everyday life. Whatever I was doing, whether that was playing Minecraft with some friends while chatting on Skype or gaming on my almost completely broken PS3. It was the feeling of creating something that just got me hooked.
Flash forward to my first year of high school. I fell in love with the art of Photography. I spent every waking moment editing, planning, and shooting pictures of anything, whether that was landscapes, my dogs, my friends, or even products that I just enjoyed using. Photography was my sense of expression and allowed me to thrive in my creativity.
Now, in 2023, a couple of friends and I started a media company called “Unrelatable.” With this company, we plan to turn this into a sketch comedy show similar to SNL, but on the Internet. We want to bring back the early 2000s comedy that has been lost in translation today.
I’ve known since I was a kid that I wanted this to be my career path, but it took me until this year to figure out how to do it. There’s nothing more confusing than finding your path in this world, so to anyone confused or questioning if they’re taking the right steps, I must say that if you don’t try it, it’ll be your number one regret.
In the words of Jim Carrey, “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey there! I’m Luca, the proud Co-Founder of “Unrelatable,” a comedy content company that’s all about bringing back the humor of the early 2000s in a fresh online format. Here’s a bit of backstory on me. I’ve been passionate about creating content since I was a kid. My journey started with making simple Minecraft YouTube videos in my NYC basement in the 5th grade. Growing up in New York meant that there was inspiration for my creativity everywhere. I am extremely grateful for my parents, friends, and the city of New York. Without them, I have no idea of the person that I would be today. Moving to California has fortunately helped me make some great friendships and connections, which have allowed me to evolve as a creator and start as a photographer and Co-Founder of Unrelatable. One of my biggest goals is going to sound cheesy, but it’s to inspire people like me. People who felt like it took “forever” to find their path. People who have had doubts about doing what they love. People who have yet to find their path and feel like they never will. I had many ups and downs in my creative career and personal life, and many times, I thought I was a lost cause. I thought I would never find my way or my passion. Even though I really wanted to, I didn’t give up. Now, I am doing something that I love beyond words can describe.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Absolutely, there are aspects of the creative journey that non-creatives might find challenging to understand fully. One key point is the level of emotional investment and vulnerability that goes into creating something from scratch. As a creative, your work often reflects a piece of your soul. It reflects your mental state or past events in your life. Many times, when you create something, it isn’t just something external that you made. It is a part of you expressed in your art form in an incredibly unique way.
Non-creatives also may struggle to understand the degree of risk or uncertainty associated with taking this as a career path. I feel like I can speak for many creatives when I say that I would rather be broke doing what I love than rich doing what I hate. That’s not to say that many creators don’t do very well for themselves. I say this because the path of being a creative of any kind is not linear. It is not a paved path, a one-size-fits-all. Creatives each find their own path and pave it themselves, and that’s one of the things that’s so confusing for many non-creatives. For me, the uncertainty gives me adrenaline; it fuels me. It motivates me. There is no right or wrong. There is simply go or do not go.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
When it comes to media that has inspired me and impacted my philosophy, one that comes to mind is “Do What You Can’t” by Casey Neistat. This video, through Casey’s personal journey and storytelling, emphasizes the importance of challenging norms, pushing boundaries, and embracing creativity. It encourages us to break free from limitations and perceived impossibilities, which resonates deeply with the entrepreneurial spirit of defying conventions to achieve success.
