We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mimi Beumer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mimi below.
Mimi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have been into photography since I was a child. I remember snapping pictures on an old disposable camera and pretending I knew what I was doing. About 4 years ago I decided to turn my love for photography into a real thing. I upgraded cameras, and lenses, and I haven’t stopped since. I started small with doing photos for family and friends. I was advertising myself to local groups. That quickly turned into strangers asking about photo sessions. My Facebook page had really picked up by then. Over a year ago, my husband and I started to host events for drifting. Of course, I took that as a chance to try to get a few cool shots. From that point on, motorsports photography has basically become my life. I didn’t realize that would open more doors at the time. I expanded to other platforms and started editing videos and posting reels, I never expected some of them to go viral! My mission is to show other women that they can completely be comfortable in this male dominated industry. I want other women to feel welcome and encourage them to get out of their comfort zone. Every event I have been to has been a learning experience for me. I have met some of the most amazing, and talented people doing this. In the last year I have learned more about photography and what I’m capable of. I’m still on the search to find myself in the industry but I believe with my whole heart, I am where I am supposed to be.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My husband and I started hosting drift events over a year ago. We run a motorsports event company. Our home track is Midpond Raceway in Columbiana, Alabama. I was already well into photography and had a small business before that. I wasn’t happy with that though. I felt like I needed to be doing more. Motorsports photography is far more exciting for me. I genuinely enjoy it. Since starting this, I have been able to not only offer photography services but also videography. I am pushing to change my brand more toward “media” in the future verse just “photography,” I look forward to continuing to grow and meet new people.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m a parent to 3 girls and I strive to show them every day that they can do anything. My goals for the future are to be able to say I’m a full time motorsports photographer. I hope to keep growing as a photographer and grow my audience.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My advice to anyone starting out would be to keep posting no matter what! If you want to get your work out there, share it! Use the right hashtags, and platforms that fit what you are doing. Advertise to locals, friends, and family. Use the little resources you have and research what you can. My audience has been built from mostly friends, networking, and videos. Putting in work to stay consistent has been my biggest challenge but it’s the most important part of it.
